What Makes Cement Absorb Water in the First Place?
Cement naturally absorbs water. When mixed with sand to make mortar, the finished product is porous, and that porosity is the problem. Water finds its way through tiny gaps, and once inside, the damage builds up fast. Water in mortar and concrete speeds up alkali sulphate reactions and causes the steel rebars inside to rust. Over time, this weakens the whole structure from within.
How Is Water Repellent Cement Made?
The fix happens at the factory, before the cement even reaches the site. Special chemical additives coat each cement particle with a very thin layer. This layer lowers the surface energy of the particle so water cannot wet it easily. These additives go in during the clinker grinding stage, along with pozzolan and gypsum.

The piles were also protected by a special waterproofing membrane. This level of care with moisture resistance was not optional. It was what made a 828-metre structure possible in a harsh, wet, and corrosive environment.

Water repellent cement works best wherever water contact is constant or heavy. Think water storage tanks, effluent treatment plants, sewerage lines, basement walls, and coastal or high-humidity construction. It also holds up better than standard cement when stored outdoors in bad weather.
Is the Extra Cost of Underground Water Proofing Worth It?
Yes, the additive does add to the cost of cement. But compare that to the cost of repairing water-damaged walls, replacing rusted rebars, or redoing a waterproofing job on a surface that has already failed.
