Water Repellent Cement

Cement absorbs water and form a paste. When cement is mixed with sand( mortar)  , the finished product absorbs water as it is porous in nature.

The ingress of water in mortar and concrete causes damage in the structure by accelerating alkali sulphate reaction and promoting corrosion of rebars.

The cement can be made hydrophobic in nature during production. There are chemicals and additive which forms a thin layer on cement particle to reduce its surface energy and its wetting ability.

The additive is added during the grinding stage of clinker along with pozzolan and gypsum.

The cement develops a character of water repellent surface.

Depending upon the additive, the cured cement surface may show lotus effect when water is added on the surface or it may show a very low absorption of water.

This water repellent, hydrophobic additive increases the cost of the cement but this type of cement is most suitable for water storage tank, ETP plant, sewerage line.

The cement as such is more stable in adverse weather conditions also while in bags.
