A cement grinding additive is a speciality chemical added during the clinker grinding stage, alongside pozzolan and gypsum, to modify the surface properties of cement particles. Instead of changing cement after manufacturing, the additive is engineered directly into the production process, giving every batch of cement built-in performance characteristics like water repellency and corrosion resistance.
Core Functions of a Cement Grinding Additive
| Function | Concrete Impact |
| Surface Energy Reduction | Actively resists wetting and moisture. |
| Hydrophobic Coating | Applies protective film during grinding. |
| pH Maintenance | Keeps internal pH > 12 to protect steel rebar. |
| Storage Stability | Boosts shelf-life and adverse weather resistance. |
| Grade Specialisation | Enables custom cement for water-critical structures. |
● Reduces the surface energy of cement particles so they resist wetting
● Forms a thin hydrophobic layer on each particle during grinding
● Maintains an alkaline pH inside cured concrete to protect embedded rebar
● Improves cement stability in adverse weather, even while in storage bags
● Enables specialised cement grades for water-critical structures
The Mechanism of Cement Grinding Additive: How It Actually Works
- 1) Hydrophobic (Water Repellent) Action Ordinary cement is porous; when mixed into mortar or concrete, it readily absorbs water. That absorption is a problem because water ingress accelerates the alkali-sulphate reaction and drives corrosion of reinforcement bars over time.
-
- A water-repellent grinding additive coats each cement particle with a molecular-thin film that lowers its surface energy and wetting ability. The result is cement that behaves differently once cured: depending on the additive dosage, the surface either shows a pronounced “lotus effect,” beading water off entirely, or exhibits a significantly reduced water absorption rate. This makes the cement especially suited to water storage tanks, ETP plants, sewerage lines, and other structures where standing water is a constant condition.
- 2) Corrosion Inhibition Concrete is naturally alkaline, and that alkalinity is what protects steel reinforcement from corroding. But over time, capillary action draws in water, carbon dioxide, and dissolved sulphates, gradually lowering the concrete’s pH. Once pH drops below 12, electrolytic corrosion of rebar begins.
-
- A corrosion-inhibitor grinding additive addresses this at the source. Because of its high vapour pressure, the chemical migrates through the concrete’s capillary network and forms a molecular passive layer on the reinforcement bar itself. This keeps the internal pH above 12, halting both cathodic and anodic corrosion before it starts, rather than trying to repair damage after the fact.
Cement Grinding Aid- Ideal Implementation Sites
Structure Type | Key Vulnerability | Additive Defense |
Basements & Foundations | Hydrostatic pressure. | First-line barrier against ground moisture. |
Water Tanks & ETPs | Constant standing water. | Prevents capillary absorption. |
Retaining Walls | Soil moisture seepage. | Protects internal reinforcement grid. |
Underground and below-grade structures (basements, foundations, retaining walls, water tanks) face constant hydrostatic pressure and water ingress during and after construction. Grinding-stage additives work as a first line of defence, complementing surface treatments like bitumen-based polymeric damp-proof coatings, which can be brushed, rolled, or sprayed and withstand up to 3 metres of positive water pressure once cured.
About Sudha Speciality Chemicals Pvt. Ltd.
Founded in 2002 and headquartered in Kolkata, Sudha Speciality Chemicals has spent over two decades formulating speciality chemicals across cement, steel, textile, ETP, and mining applications. Our edge lies in addressing performance problems at the manufacturing stage, not after the structure is built. Our cement grinding additives are engineered in-house, tested for real plant conditions, and backed by a team that understands both the chemistry and the operational realities of grinding circuits.
